It won’t let me run the Malwarebytes program, or spybot, or any of them. I click on it, and I get the hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing. I also looked around in the registry to manually remove it, but nothing shows up – any ideas?

you better give a try to “hijack this!” and “regrun reanimator”
remember that, both program list you “important” entries on your system they dont automatically catch anything.

    hxxp://merijn.nu/programs.php#hijackthis
download hijackthis and “do a system scan and save a log file”. copy the whole log file to clipboard and paste it to:
    hxxp://www.hijackthis.de/
you can see a detailed report on your “hijack this!” log.

also give a try to regrun reanimator:
    hxxp://greatis.com/security/reanimator.html
it scans for driver files and recently loaded registry files and compares it to your hdd in case of a rootkit.
you can follow the instructions there and wait for remote analyze steps there.
Altough you can clean your own computer by the help of some url addresses.
    hxxp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/rootkit.html
that page have loads of info on rootkits other than that (i mean if it doesnt let you see BC page) you can use search engines to get information you need. Never delete something unless you’re sure of it.

Also use “Sandboxie” while surfing next time.

[...] When SpyProtector in already installed on board a computer, it loads plenty of pop-ups and demand paying for the services. This program provides no useful services; it simply displays falsified security reports and redirects web browser to a website which sells SpyProtector copies. Avoid downloading SpyProtector and donât trust spyprotector.org! The website may look legitimate, but itâs a trap. $49.95 or $79.95 is way too much for keeping malware on your computer. Remove this threat as soon as possible; otherwise you will lose control of your computer due to SpyProtector activities. [Via] [...]
